Savitri ist Sri Aurobindos poetisches Hauptwerk, ein Epos in Blankversen von etwa 24.000 Zeilen, in dem eine Erzählung aus dem Mahabharata zum Symbol für die spirituelle Suche und das Schicksal der menschlichen Seele wird.

„Die Geschichte von Satyavan und Savitri“, so Sri Aurobindo, „wird im Mahabharata als eine Geschichte ehelicher Liebe erzählt, die den Tod besiegt“. Sri Aurobindo hat die ursprüngliche Legende erweitert und in ein Symbol verwandelt, in dem die Seele des Menschen, dargestellt durch Satyavan, durch die Liebe und die Kraft der Göttlichen Mutter, die als Savitri auf der Erde inkarniert ist, aus dem Griff des Todes und der Unwissenheit befreit wird.

Sri Aurobindo arbeitete mehr als dreißig Jahre lang an diesem Gedicht. Auf die Frage eines Schülers, warum er es immer wieder umschreibe, antwortete er: „Das ist ganz einfach. Ich benutzte Savitri als Mittel des Aufstiegs. Ich habe es auf einer bestimmten mentalen Ebene begonnen, und jedes Mal, wenn ich eine höhere Ebene erreichen konnte, habe ich es von dieser Ebene aus neu geschrieben... In der Tat habe ich Savitri nicht als ein Gedicht betrachtet, das geschrieben und vollendet werden sollte, sondern als ein Experimentierfeld, um zu sehen, inwieweit Poesie aus dem eigenen yogischen Bewusstsein heraus geschrieben werden kann und wie man sie schöpferisch gestalten kann.

„Die Mutter betrachtete Savitri als „die höchste Offenbarung von Sri Aurobindos Vision“ und nannte es „das wunderbare prophetische Gedicht, das der Menschheit den Weg zu ihrer zukünftigen Verwirklichung weisen wird.“
